Advantages of Caudectomy
Tail docking (caudectomy) in lamb, piglets, and occasionally cattle remains an important husbandry practice for health, welfare, and management.
Removing a tail by a caudectomy procedure can have many advantages. A caudectomy procedure can:
- Increase the fat deposition on the tail
- Improve external parasite control
- Reduce urine and fecal soiling or dag formation
- Improve the cleanliness of sheep wool
- Improve animal performance
- Reduce incidence of tail injury
- Reduce incidence of mastitis
- Reduce fecal contamination and risks to food safety
