Advantages of Caudectomy

Tail docking (caudectomy) in lamb, piglets, and occasionally cattle remains an important husbandry practice for health, welfare, and management.

Removing a tail by a caudectomy procedure can have many advantages. A caudectomy procedure can:

  • Increase the fat deposition on the tail
  • Improve external parasite control
  • Reduce urine and fecal soiling or dag formation
  • Improve the cleanliness of sheep wool
  • Improve animal performance
  • Reduce incidence of tail injury
  • Reduce incidence of mastitis
  • Reduce fecal contamination and risks to food safety
