Solarization Steps

Solarization: Soil solarization is an environmentally friendly method of using the sun's power to control pests such as bacteria, insects, and weeds in the soil.

Solarization

Procedure:

  • Site preparation. Remove existing weeds, sticks, old roots and other debris.
  • Select plastic material, the size of plastic material depends on the amount of soil to sterilize.
  • Water the soil for keeping moisture and heat conduction
  • Cover the soil with clear plastic
  • Bury the edges of plastic material. This helps quicken the process.
  • Use solarized soil. The best months for solarization are during June, July and August because these have the hottest temperatures and the least precipitation. It may take up to six weeks to completely sterilize the soil.
