Appropriate wound aftercare is important to ensure that the wound heals as quickly and healthy as possible without complications.

Key elements of post-operative wound management include:

  • Timely review of the wound
  • Appropriate cleansing (using sterile and electrolyte balanced solution line normal saline), and dressing of the wound
  • Recognizing any complications or infection and intervening quickly
  • Keeping wounds clean
  • Timely dressing change and appropriate dressing choice (use of autolytic debridement when needed)
  • Using antibiotic treatments where needed
