EMBEDDED SYSTEM FIRMWARE DEVELOPMENT
Module Learning Outcomes
Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBT/A)
📘 Module Overview
This module provides the essential knowledge and practical skills required to understand computer systems and architecture, with a specific focus on Embedded System Firmware Development.
Through hands-on activities, practical exercises, and real-world projects, trainees will develop competencies in identifying firmware requirements, designing firmware architecture, implementing firmware, and deploying firmware on embedded hardware.
🎯 Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, trainees will be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:
📋 Learning Outcome 1: Identify Firmware Requirements
Description:
Determine and analyze firmware requirements based on system specifications, user needs, and embedded system application requirements.
Key competencies:
- Identify user and system requirements.
- Analyze embedded system specifications.
- Identify hardware and software requirements.
- Determine firmware functionality and performance needs.
Practical example: Identify the firmware requirements for a smart home temperature monitoring system using a temperature sensor and microcontroller.
🏗️ Learning Outcome 2: Design Firmware Architecture
Description:
Develop appropriate firmware architecture by selecting suitable hardware interfaces, software components, and system design approaches.
Key competencies:
- Identify suitable firmware architecture.
- Design firmware modules and their interactions.
- Select appropriate microcontrollers and peripherals.
- Prepare firmware flowcharts and system block diagrams.
Practical example: Design a firmware architecture for an automatic irrigation system using a soil moisture sensor, microcontroller, and water pump.
💻 Learning Outcome 3: Implement Firmware System Design
Description:
Develop, integrate, and test firmware components according to the designed architecture and embedded system requirements.
Key competencies:
- Write firmware code using an appropriate programming language.
- Configure microcontroller input and output pins.
- Integrate sensors, actuators, and communication interfaces.
- Debug and test firmware functionality.
Practical example: Write and test Arduino firmware that reads temperature values from a sensor and activates a fan when the temperature reaches a specified threshold.
🚀 Learning Outcome 4: Deploy Firmware
Description:
Upload, configure, and verify firmware on target embedded hardware to ensure that the system operates according to its intended functionality.
Key competencies:
- Configure the firmware development environment.
- Compile and upload firmware to the target microcontroller.
- Verify firmware operation on embedded hardware.
- Identify and resolve deployment errors.
- Document and evaluate the deployed system.
Practical example: Upload a completed smart lighting firmware program to an Arduino board and verify that the LED responds correctly to sensor input.
🛠️ Learning Activity
Task: Explore the Firmware Development Process
Work individually or in small groups to discuss the following questions:
- What is firmware, and why is it important in embedded systems?
- What information is needed before developing firmware?
- Why is firmware architecture important?
- Which tools can be used to implement and deploy firmware?
- Give one real-life example of a system that uses firmware.
Instructions: Discuss your answers, prepare a short presentation, and share your findings with the class.
