FORWC501- WOOD CHARCOAL MAKING
Introduction
Charcoal is a prime source of energy in most African countries, and is a driving force in their
economies. Worldwide charcoal production has increased over time, rising by an annual of 3.7%
from 1990 to reach 44 million tons in 2014. It is estimated that over 23 million tons of charcoal
was produced in Africa in 2012; according for over half (53 percent) of total world production
4
(FAO, 2011). Charcoal plays a duals role of providing a source of livelihood for rural populations
and an affordable energy option for the urban populations as it is mainly sold in urban areas while
production is done mainly in rural areas.
