Purpose of Plant Grafting
Plant grafting is a commonly used horticultural technique and method of plant propagation that involves joining a scion of one plant with a rootstock of another so that they grow together as one plant.
Plant grafting is used for a variety of reasons and can have many advantages. Some reasons why two plants may be grafted include to:
- Repair damaged plants.
- Strengthen disease resistance or hardiness provided by the rootstock.
- Shorten the time taken to produce/mature flowers or fruits.
- Make the height and shape of a scion more convenient for harvesting.
- Combine or retain desirable characteristics of one or both plants.
- Adapt plant varieties to different soil or climatic conditions.
